Technology & Skills Labs
Located in the Hardy Memorial Tower building (see map)
of San Diego State University, the School of Nursing maintains three laboratory facilities for students:
- Media Lab
Contains a videotape library, PCs, training on supported software, instructional software, multimedia software and equipment, and medical diagnostic equipment provided for student use.
- Physical Assessment Lab Exam Rooms
Examination rooms used to simulate the real-world assessment environment.
- Sharp Healthcare Human Patient Simulation Center
The Sharp Healthcare Human Patient Simulation Center (SHC HPSC) is a 7 bed simulated hospital unit housed in the SDSU School of Nursing. The HPSC opened in August of 2006 with the help of a million dollar grant from Sharp Healthcare for operation of the Center.
The HPSC has six patient simulators, four adult, one pediatric and one baby from Medical Education Technology, INC and one Noelle birthing simulator from Gaumard. The HPSC uses equipment and supplies found in a standard hospital environment to make the simulation experience as real as possible. Students can expect at least one simulated clinical experience per semester.
Simulated scenarios range from basic assessment of a hip fracture patient to care of critical care patient in septic shock. Currently there is one full time and one part time faculty member and a graduate assistant running the HPSC. Course faculty are responsible for scenario set up, simulation character interactions and technical support during the simulations. Currently, over 1800 student experiences have taken place in the SHC HPSC.
In addition, SON students have access to the University's computing facilities available to all SDSU students.
