Scholarly Areas: All aspects of Critical Care Nursing, especially shock and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome; Management of Patients with Heart Failure, especially the conceptual understanding and measurement of factors influencing health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and the development of strategies to improve HRQOL with a particular emphasis on the concept and measurement of self-care in HF (SCHF) and strategies to influence SCHF.
Biography: Beverly Carlson is a lecturer in the Graduate Advanced Practice Nursing of Adults and Elderly Program and the Undergraduate Bachelor of Science Nursing Program at San Diego State University in San Diego, California. Beverly is a Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist with an extensive background in critical care nursing and education. She also has a substantial background in disease management and outcomes research, primarily pertaining to patients with heart failure (HF). From 1995 through 2007, she served as the Project Director for multiple single and multi-site national and international studies of various approaches to the management of cardiac disease. She is a coauthor of Self-Care of Heart Failure Index (SCHFI), an original tool developed with Dr. Barbara Riegel to measure self-care abilities of patients with HF.
Ms. Carlson has an extensive history of local and national professional presentations. She is widely published in the professional literature and serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, the American Journal of Critical Care Nursing, and the Journal of Cardiac Failure. She has been an active member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses since 1973 and was a founding board member of the San Diego Chapter of AACN. She has been certified as a CCRN since 1978. She is also an active member of the American Heart Association (AHA) Nursing Council and the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA).
Ms. Carlson is currently pursuing her PhD in Nursing through the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Nursing with a focus on perceived health status and adherence in the HF population.
