Scholarly Areas: Dr. Hatton’s background is in the area of community/public health nursing with a special interest in the health and human rights of vulnerable women and their families. Her research has focused on the health and healthcare access of homeless women and women prisoners. Her program of research includes the use of community based participatory research (CBPR) methods.
Biography: Dr. Hatton is working with research colleagues to investigate policies in jails and prisons that impact the health and human rights of women prisoners. She is the co-editor of a book published August 2009 by Radcliffe entitled: Women Prisoners and Health Justice: Perspectives, Issues, and Advocacy for an International Hidden Population. This edited book is the result of an international, interdisciplinary meeting held at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Study and Conference Center in Bellagio, Italy.
Dr. Hatton was the 2008 Chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights (COWR) of the American Public Health Association. This standing committee is concerned with women’s rights, including a primary focus on gender inequities in health care and health policy. With SDSU School of Nursing colleagues Dr. Hatton is collaborating with the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland (HES-SO) for a student/faculty exchange program.
