Scholarly Areas:

Dr. Anderson has published more than 25 articles in peer reviewed journals and given more than 50 presentations at national and international conferences in 6 countries. Her publications encompass a breath of topics in the area of nursing and genetics with a national and an international perspective. Her ethics and genetics publications focus on human rights, research ethics, feminist ethics, and policy development in nursing and genetic research. Her nursing research publications focus on patients’ and families’ perspectives of genetic information and ethical issues related to prenatal genetic testing and cancer genetic counseling. Her genetic nursing education publications focus on international policy development for genetic nursing education, certification of genetic nursing practice, web based genetic nursing education, and theoretical foundations of and knowledge utilization for advancing genetic nursing education and practice

Biography:

Gwen Anderson, R.N., Ph.D. has played a role in genetic nursing education, genetic research, and clinical genetics since 1984. She received a 1999 International Dissertation award by Sigma Theta Tau for her research into patient’s perspectives of ethical issues in prenatal genetic testing. In 1999, Dr. Anderson was awarded an educational grant by the National Human Genome Research Institute, the Ethical, Legal and Social Implications Research Branch for an integrative review of genetic nursing literature published between 1900 and 1999. In 2000, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University: Center for Biomedical Ethics in the area of feminist critique of breast cancer genetic screening. She was sponsored as a research fellow in genetic nursing education and international genetic research by the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science in 2000. Between November 2000 and March 2001, as a Nurse Geneticist and in collaboration with a medical geneticist, Dr. Anderson developed the first Medical Genetics clinical program on California’s Central Coast at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. In February 2003, Dr. Anderson joined the School of Nursing at San Diego State University as an Associate Professor.

Dr. Anderson is a member of numerous national and international organizations involved in medical genetics, genetic nursing, and bioethics. She has been a member of the International Society of Nurses in Genetics since 1991 and now serves as an International Liaison. She is a board member of the Genetic Nursing Credentialing Commission. She is participating in international collaborations aimed at credentialing genetic nursing worldwide.
