Evidence-Based Practice Institute, 2008

Do you have a clinical question?
Find the answer - make a change!

This is your chance as a bedside nurse to make a difference in clinical practice.

Evidence-based practice in nursing is vital to improving healthcare and advancing nursing science. The Evidence-Based Practice Institute (EBPI) prepares teams of staff and advance practice nurses to serve as leaders and mentors in changing and improving nursing care. This change occurs through identifying a nursing care problem, developing a way to solve it, and then incorporating the new knowledge into practice.

San Diego EBPI Goals include

  • Fostering networks for mutual sharing, innovative thinking and creative problem-solving of problems encountered in bedside nursing
  • Preparing nurses for EBP through building knowledge and skills
  • Engaging staff nurses to become active participants in their work environment
  • Providing opportunities for professional growth and development for staff nurses

Program Description

The San Diego EBPI consists of 6 full day classes beginning in March and culminating with a Graduation Ceremony in November. The project results of all the fellows are shared at this Graduation Ceremony. Class and project time will be supported by your organization (see your application packet). Fellows will partner with mentors (advanced practice nurses or other nurse leaders in their own organization) as an essential component to the success of the program. Mentors serve to facilitate the process of conducting an EBP change and navigating the hospital system so that the fellow is able to successfully complete the project. Mentors will also assist the fellow in working collaboratively with other key hospital leadership personnel. Fellows selected for the institute will participate in a variety of learning strategies with a mentor partner. Strategies utilized by San Diego EBPI will include class sessions incorporating group activities along with self-directed learning activities outside of class sessions and a structured mentorship throughout the program.
