INR Mission

Many authorities have said that the survival of health care organizations in the future will depend on the quality of care that they provide. In order to promote quality nursing services in San Diego while maximizing expert resources, the Institute for Nursing Research (INR) was founded at San Diego State University, School of Nursing, in the Spring of 1988.

The SDSU Institute for Nursing Research was founded in the belief that collaboration between nursing faculty and colleagues in service settings will enable all involved to share expertise and resources, to assist each other in the research process, and to conduct multisite studies. Eight institutions initially invited to participate in the Institute were selected because of their ties to the School of Nursing through its baccalaureate and graduate education programs, and the commitment of these institutions to the development of nursing research in the San Diego area.

The overall aim of the Institute for Nursing Research is to promote collaboration in the conduct, dissemination, and utilization of nursing research that will contribute to the quality of patient care and service. Specific objectives are the following:

  • to provide a forum for dialogue regarding research interests and activities
  • to foster collaborative research efforts among nurse educators, clinicians, students and San Diego State University, School of Nursing faculty
  • to identify research priorities for individual multi-site research projects
  • to provide consultation for design, method , analysis, computer services, instrumentation, and manuscript preparation
  • to facilitate access to research subjects
  • to facilitate grant application for funded research and administration of funds for conducting research
  • to facilitate the dissemination of research findings through assistance with the publication and presentation process.

The current focus of the Institute is encouragement of research studies through support of students, faculty, educators, and clinicians by the annual award of funds for pilot projects.
