- Can you send me information regarding the nursing program?
The School of Nursing (SON) does not send information via U.S. mail. We encourage you to browse this section of the site to obtain general information.
If you have further questions, after reviewing the information on our website, you may wish to attend a group advising session. These sessions are offered for pre-nursing students only seeking admission into our traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program. You may sign up online or contact the SON office at 619-594-2540.
- Where can I obtain an application for the School of Nursing?
You can download and print the SON application on the application & deadline page. You can either mail or bring the application to the SON office located at Hardy Tower Room 58.
Note: If you are a transfer student you must also complete the CSU application online. CSU/SDSU always requires a supplemental application for transfer students. Please follow the CSU instructions to complete their application process.
- What are the deadlines for submitting an application to the SON?
Fall Semester: October 1st through November 30th of the previous year
Spring Semester: August 1st through August 31st of the previous year
THERE ARE NO EXTENSIONS OF DEADLINES…if your application is late you will be required to wait another semester to apply.
- What documents make up the "Nursing Packet"?
The Nursing Packet includes official transcripts of all colleges and universities attended, including an SDSU transcript for those attending SDSU, documentation of health care experience, TEAS test results, and for students who declared pre-nursing prior to the Fall 08 academic year include your leadership letter and proof of foreign language ability through coursework or bilingual ability if you are using these point options.
Final grades for "grades in progress" for Fall semester must be received no later than June 5th. Final grades for "grades in progress" for Spring semester must be received no later than December 31st.
- Is there a waiting list to enter the School of Nursing?
The SON does not have a waiting list. We use a point system to find the best qualified students for admission each semester.
- How does the point system work?
The following factors are considered:
- Overall GPA for the eight pre-requisite courses (minimum 2.5 GPA)
- Health Care Experience (minimum 60 hours/will increase to 100 hours Fall09)
- Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) (minimum 75%)
- University lower division requirements (see your catalog for these requirements)
Note: Please download the admission criteria (pdf).
- Do I need an RN license to enter your program?
No.
- Is there an application fee for the School of Nursing?
No.
- Do I need to apply to San Diego State University to get into the School of Nursing?
Yes. You must be accepted into SDSU to be considered for the nursing program.
- How many applications are received each semester? How many nursing students are admitted each semester?
Approximately 300 - 400 applications are received each semester. Currently, the nursing program admits 110 students each semester.
- How long does it take to complete a Bachelor Degree in Nursing?
Once a student is admitted to the School of Nursing it will take five semesters to complete the program. Students are eligible to declare the nursing major upon acceptance into the program. Prior to acceptance they may not enroll in any nursing courses and maintain a pre-nursing major status. A majority of our students complete their bachelor's degree in nursing in four and a half years from the time they enter the university as a freshman.
- Are any nursing scholarships available?
The School of Nursing has numerous scholarships available for nursing majors. Refer to our scholarships page.
- What if I am not admitted to the nursing program?
There are many outstanding nursing programs throughout California. You can "goggle" nursing schools for an extensive listing. In addition you might want to consider the following options:
- Earn an Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) from a Community College and transfer to SDSU's ADN to BSN Program to complete your BSN within a year.
- Earn an undergrad degree in a discipline, other than nursing, and apply to CSU San Marcos' accelerated 18 month nursing program for a second bachelor's degree in nursing.
- Earn a BSN through a private university (e.g. National University) and apply to SDSU's graduate nursing program.
- Earn a certificate as an LVN via a community college program and re-apply to SDSU to obtain the courses needed for eligibility to the RN license examination. This option has no relationship to degree requirements and degree completion.
