This innovative partnership is designed to:
- Increase admission of students into the BSN program at SDSU
- Increase recruitment and retention of newly graduated nurses into the VA
- Transform the baccalaureate nursing educational process by offering students a comprehensive residency program during the senior year
- Implement a faculty development program for VA-based faculty to develop education knowledge, educator roles, and competencies

The VA Nursing Academy (VANA) is a five year $40 million pilot program to enhance partnerships between VA facilities and nursing schools.
San Diego State University School of Nursing (SDSU SON) and the VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) were one of the first four partnerships chosen in July, 2007 from across the country.
Students who are currently enrolled in the School of Nursing at SDSU are eligible for the Academy.
