Karen A. Macauley, PhD, DNP, FNP-BC, GNP-BC received her ADN/RN from Southwestern College in 1980, BS from San Diego State University in 1988, MSN in 1995, Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2010 and Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing in 2013 from the University of San Diego (USD). She has been working in the communities of San Diego as a Registered Nurse (41 years) and as a certified Family and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner (26 years) in Internal Medicine, Occupational Health, Family Practice and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Macauley served as the Associate Dean of Advanced Practice Programs and Associate Professor overseeing the Simulation, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Nurse Practitioner (NP), and Health Care Informatics programs at USD’s Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science. She was USD’s founding Simulation and Innovative Learning Center Director and was responsible for the development of the simulation and standardized patient programs. She was also influential in the design, planning, fundraising, and construction of USD’s Beyster Institute of Nursing Research, Advanced Practice, and Simulation, opening September 2, 2015.
Dr. Macauley has an extensive background in advanced practice nursing, nursing education, competency tool development with specific training and expertise in curricular development and integration of simulation and standardized patient methodologies into nursing and interprofessional education. Dr. Macauley has provided development opportunities for faculty and conducted research on innovative teaching and competency assessment methods to span across pre-licensure and advanced practice nursing curriculums. She has presented nationally and internationally on how to integrate simulation and standardized patient methodologies into nursing.
As a practice scholar, she has participated in ongoing scholarship, funded research and implemented evidenced-based practice projects in local health care settings. Dr. Macauley has secured sustained funding to develop a pipeline of nurses from ImperialCounty, CA to pursue NP education. She has developed partnerships fostering faculty/student engagement opportunities supporting underserved communities and clinical placements in San Diego and Imperial County.
Because of her dedication to the NP role and accomplishments as an NP educator, she received the California Association of Nurse Practitioner’s NP Distinction Award in 2016 and was nominated for USD’s Woman of Impact Award in 2014.
